Space Timeline Reading Task

 Space timeline Reading tasks.

Term 2 Weeks 5-6

Purpose of this reading activity is to: increase our knowledge of space
exploration and understand how our knowledge and ideas about space
have changed over time (science). We are also learning to read non-fiction
texts and use our writing skills to share our understanding of this topic and
our ideas (literacy). Throughout this task we will need to use the skills of
‘Thinking’ and using ‘Language, Symbols and Text.’

Learning Intentions
I am learning to skim and scan text to identify the main ideas.
I am learning to locate the key sentences and questions in texts.
I am learning to use sub-headings to guide me to the main ideas in text.
I am learning to summarise the main ideas in the texts I read.
(from the Karoro Programme of work for Reading)

Success Criteria
I will be successful when I can show….
-I have have scanned text to find key ideas.
-I have summarised the main ideas from the reading.
-I have put my answers in chronological order.

Focus

We are looking at using non-fiction text to increase our knowledge in our
science topic; SPACE. Your aim is to read and understand the timeline reading
and use this knowledge to complete the reading activity below.

First, Read the timeline cards. Click here for the space timeline pdf

Second, We will discuss what you have read. This will be a good time
to ask questions about anything you are unsure of.

Third, do your reading tasks.

Fourth, complete your reading activity. Remember to proofread, check
spelling and punctuation. Then do a self assessment and a peer assessment. Check it with a teacher.

Reading Activity

View and read the space timeline on the classroom walls.
Think about how how our theories/ideas and understandings
about the universe and Earth’s place in it has changed over time.

Answer the following questions.
Your answers need to be full sentences.
After you have answered all the questions please put them in
chronological order (time order, oldest first)

different phases of Venus. (1610)

2) Who discovered the first asteroid? The first asteroid was
discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi. (1801)

This was called Sputnik 1 and it was a satellite
and it sent the  first signals from space. (1957)

(National Aeronautics
and Space Administration) (1958)

America launched Voyager probes 1 and 2 into deep space. (1977)

9) What happened that led to all space shuttles being grounded
for 3 years? Space shuttle Challenger exploded after launch,
killing the seven astronauts on board.  (1986)

10) When was the international space station completed?
They started building it in 1986 and they finished it in 2010. (1986)
11) How long did it take for the Cassini probe to arrive at Saturn?
After travelling for nearly seven years, the Cassini probe arrived
at Saturn. (2004)

12) What was interesting about New Horizons information about Pluto?
Data sent to the Earth showed that Pluto is fifty miles larger than was first
thought. (2015)

YOUR OPINION
After reading this information...

  1. Who do you think made the biggest contribution
  2. to our understanding of space?  Why?
  3. I think that Galileo because he found Jupiter's
  4. moon and the different phases of Venus.
  5. He also invented the first telescope.  (summarising key ideas)

    2) What do you think was the most important machine or
invention in helping us investigate space? Why?
(summarising key ideas) I think that the Space shuttles
are important because they carry people to space.

    3) What would you like to investigate about space? Why?
I would like to learn about the moon.
The moon was formed about 4.5 billion years ago following a collision
between Earth and an object the size of mars.

However as the moon moves around Earth, we see different parts
of that illuminated half (outer circle)

On the moon things weigh about one sixth as much as they do on earth
because the pull of gravity is weaker there.

The first science fiction film made in 1902 was about a trip to the moon.

with a teacher before you start writing.

Third, do your piece of writing.

Fourth, complete you piece of writing. Remember to proof-read

BlueWaterina is planet in the rex glandon solar system. It is next to Oceanoraus.
It is a giant terrestrial planet.

The weather is good and it gets
up to  45 degrees celsius in the water and in spring. It gets hotter in summer.
Sometimes there are little tornadoes in the water so you evacuate the water
straight away otherwise the fish get mad and make a whirlpool and they send
you back to Australia.

To get there, first, you have to go to the Little Sandy Desert in Australia.
Then you have to find an old golden key in the white sand by a gecko hole.
Then you have to find another golden key near the gecko hole. Then you put
the two golden keys inside the gecko hole and you turn as small as a gecko.
Then a little slide appears out of lots of mist and you have to slide down the
slide and you fall into a elevator with lots of colourful fish on the outside and it
takes 5 minutes to get there. Then when you get there you will fall out of the sky.

In BlueWaterina there are lots of colourful creatures.
There is also walking fish and swimming birds.
There is lots of reptiles including drocodiles ( dragon and crocodile).
There is also a unieel (unicorn and eel) with a blue and white horn and lives
in the water and swims after colourful fish.

You can go there for a holiday and you can go there to swim all day and
you can go to the top of a enormous lighthouse with rima (five)
thousand steps. At the top of the lighthouse there is an aquarium filled with fish.

Best Part Of Me

Best Part Of Me

Learning Intentions
I am learning to use language features to make my writing interesting and engaging for the reader.
I am learning to think carefully about the words I use so that my writing is descriptive and engaging
for the reader.
I am learning to add an appropriate visual to my work

I will be successful when I can show….
-I have used some language features to make my writing interesting and engaging
(smile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme)
-I have carefully chosen some interesting words to include in my writing
-I have some descriptive words in my writing (adjectives)

-I have added a photo to my writing

I like my feet because it would be really hard to run if
you didn't have any. They walk me every night to bed.
They hold the light, blue shoes that I wear and help me
thump on the ground and I must say they make a sound. The bones in my waewae are  rocks that cling onto my legs and make my feet really strong. I like my feet because
they move up and down and side to side. I also like
my feet because they are as fast as a cheetah. My feet are
definitely the best part of me.
