William Pike Bike Ride
Bike Ride
On Tuesday the 22nd of September my class and I drove out to Milltown to start our 33km mountain bike ride on the Wilderness Trail.
First when we arrived at school Ms Kemp sorted everyone into car groups and made sure that everyone was fully equipped with the right gear. I got to go in Scotts van with Wairini, Billie W, Phoebe, Indi, Tyler, Lily, Nevey, Emma, Poppy. In the front were the adults, Tim and Scott.
To get to Milltown we had to go through Hokitika. It took about an hour to get to Milltown from our school. When we got to Milltown we took all of our bikes off the trailers, put on our rain jackets because it was lightly raining and then lifted our bikes over the gate because it was locked from all of the cows being in the paddock with their calves. Most of the cows were brown and white but some of them were black.
When I started to bike I was going slower so that I didn't waste all my energy. I biked past this little black calf which was really cute. I biked with Olive which was really fun because we were going the same pace. Not long into the bike ride there were so many hills and I had to push my bike up them and it was so steep. After a while I saw some tracks of people cutting so I decided to cut some of them because everyone was waiting for me.
After riding my bike we finally got to go downhill into this place called Cowboys Paradise. It was a hill so some people did skids to stop and then my friends said that this guy came out and started yelling at some of the class so they were warning the rest of us not to skid but when they said that Cooper came and did a massive skid. As our class was passing through they were very quiet and making sure that they didn't skid.
When we got to the swing bridge it was so pretty and it was wider than I thought. I found it really illusional because we had to bike across it while it was swaying side to side. When we hoped of the bridge we had to go up more hills but not as many and there was also lots of downhill.
Then all of the girls got to go at the front until the next stop. The boys were right behind us tooting the horn and the others ringing their bells. Some of the girls including me, Billie H, Olive, Nevey and Emma went slow just to annoy them and they were not happy.
When we stopped we had a quick little snack and Lily gave all of the girls some pineapple lumps which was very kind of her. Then I had a muesli bar and we started to bike again.
For the next part we went through fords that were really fun to cross even though there was not much water in the fords. We biked past this little place called ‘Travelers Rest’ which looked cool because it had a teepee and a little caravan.
Then finally we got to the cars where everyone had lunch. I sat in the horse float with Billie H, Indi, Wairini and Phoebe. Billie H was really nice and gave everyone in the horse float a lollipop.
When we started to bike again there were lots of hills and flat bits on the track for the rest of the time I biked with Billie H. Then we got onto a track where there was water on each side. After we had been biking for a while we got to the dam where there were some ducks in there. Then we finally got to Kapitea Reservoir and then packed our bikes onto the trailer and then got in the van and drove back to school and as soon as we got out of the van the bell rang so we gotta go home.
I think that the ride was quite challenging but it had really nice views. I also thought it was really cool that most of the people got to finish the ride. I think that I would probably do it again but next time I would go on a few more smaller bike rides so that I would be fitter for the next time.

Lake Daniell Tramp Recount
Lake Daniell
On the 9th of September my class and I went tramping on a
spring tramp to Lake Daniell for our William Pike Challenge.
I travelled in the car with Wairini, Phoebe and my mum.
Before we left we had to learn all about hypothermia so
that we were prepared for if anything happened because
we were going in the southern alps.
First we had to stop in Reefton to go to the toilets and
have a run around. Then we went through the Lewis Pass.
When we got there we each got a number. My number was 19.
When we started walking we crossed this creek called the Sluice
Box and the water was very turquoise. While we were walking there
were lots of trees and our surroundings all looked the same.
As soon as we got to the lake it was very pretty and the water
was very still. I sat down and ate my lunch with Wairini. After
we ate our lunch I walked out on the jetty to have a closer
look at the lake. When I had finished looking at the lake I
went into the Manson Nicolls hut with Wairini and we wrote
our names on the big chalkboard. After that we went out
and took some photos of the hut and the lake.
Then we started to walk back to the cars. On the way back
I walked with Olive, Indi and Phoebe and we had lots of fun,
taking photos and making each other laugh.
While we were having a break I walked with Billie H, Billie W
and Wairini. Then we started to walk back someone started to
throw moss at us and so we threw it back which was not very
nice to the environment and also to the public. Since we did
that we had to stay at the back in front of Ms Kemp.
After that Ms Kemp decided to let us go up to the front with
Adrien. After we started to walk Adrien walked really fast so
I dropped back a bit and walked with Nevey and Billie W.
Next we got back to the cars Nathan and Charlie found this
rope swing in the bush that was tied to a tree. In that time
when it was my turn to go on the swing my foot got stuck so
Wairini and Billie W helped me get my foot out of the swing.
While it was Tyler's turn he jumped off the rope and landed
in the creek on his feet and then he fell on his knees at that
moment he jumped out of the creek. In that timeFlynns turn
came, Wairini told him to put his feet in the swing but instead
he grabbed the rope and held onto it and at that moment Flynn
got dragged down to the bottom.
I really enjoyed doing the Lake Daniell tramp with all of my friends.
I found it really fun being in the outdoors with my classmates.
I also really appreciated that heaps of parents helped transport
because without them we would not get to go.

Conservation Week Poem
Te MoanaDown by the sea shore
The sapphire water sparkles as I walk towards it
My legs lagging behind as I run through the sand
The waves roar like a lion
I get a bitter feeling as get near the water
Above my head I hear screeching seagulls
The dolphins glide through the water
Suddenly I get whiff of sea salt
The sapphire water sparkles as I walk towards it
My legs lagging behind as I run through the sand
The waves roar like a lion
I get a bitter feeling as get near the water
Above my head I hear screeching seagulls
The dolphins glide through the water
Suddenly I get whiff of sea salt

Beach Cookout
by Watson’s Creek. There were 7 groups of mixed year seven
and year eights. In my group was Olive, Xavier and Emma but she
was sick on the day. Our adult was Tanya, Olive's mum.
put on the fire after all the tinder burnt out. After that we collected
fuel wood. Then my group and I decided that we were going to make
a cabin lodge fire so that we could put the pan on the fire and it would
be stable and not fall over.
easy to cook and banana split was a bit harder to make. I think the bacon
butties were the best because I love bacon.
also when we were making and lighting the fire. I also liked eating the
giant marshmallows that Donna bought for another group.
and we also had to put sand on the fire to stop the embers from burning.
My group and I had to make several trips down to the creek to get water to
put the burning embers out and then we had to put sand over the fire and
embers so that it would smother the fire and stop it from burning.
because it was lots of fun.
