Weeks 8-10 Space Literacy  Tasks

Term 2 Weeks 9-10

Purpose of these reading activities is to: increase our knowledge
of space exploration and understand how our knowledge and ideas
about space have changed over time (science). We are also learning
to read non-fiction texts and use our writing skills to share our understanding
of this topic and our ideas (literacy). Throughout this task we will need to\
use the skills of ‘Thinking’ and using ‘Language, Symbols and Text.’

Learning Intentions
I am learning to skim and scan text to identify the main ideas.
I am learning to locate the key sentences and questions in texts.
I am learning to use sub-headings to guide me to the main ideas in text.
I am learning to summarise the main ideas in the texts I read.
(from the Karoro Programme of work for Reading)

I am learning to write well structured paragraphs.

Success Criteria
I will be successful when I can show….
-I have have scanned text to find key ideas.
-I have summarised the main ideas from the reading.
-I have put my answers in chronological order.
-I have written two well structured paragraphs explaining how some of our ideas about
space have changed over time (introductory sentence, supporting detail, concluding sentence).

Read the three paper based reading activities given to you about Stephen Hawking,
Galileo Galilei and The Telescope. You will be put with a buddy to do this work.
We will mark and discuss our answers together as a class.

To add to our learning we will watch/ read and discuss these following videos or articles. Image result for big bang theory space

After we have completed these reading activities and viewing and discussing the
above materials your task is to write at least two well structured paragraphs explaining
how our ideas about space have changed over time.

Write your paragraphs here.

How Ideas About Space Have Changed.

Over time scientists like Galileo Galilei have changed our thinking
about space. Firstly, Galileo was a an astronomer and a scientist and
he was a frequent inventor, making telescopes, thermometers and a new
kind of compass. He had some ideas that made him unpopular because
they were different to what other people believed. He argued that the Earth
went around the Sun instead of the Sun going around the Earth, but most
people did not believe him. He also made the second telescope and
announced that he saw four objects orbiting the planet Jupiter.
He announced that they were moons. The local church put him under
house arrest for what he believed.  Galileo Galilei was in front of his time
and helped us expand our knowledge of space.

Stephen Hawking was an English scientist, cosmologist, teacher and an
author who helped us by changing our ideas about the universe. He is best
known for discovering how the universe was formed and predicting what
might happen to it in the future. Stephen studied black holes. At the time,
people thought that black holes were places in space where gravity pulls so
much that even light can not get out. Yet, Stephen discovered that one thing
could escape from a black hole: radiation. Stephen Hawking helped us by
exploring space and learning more about black holes.

Space Timeline Reading Task

 Space timeline Reading tasks.

Term 2 Weeks 5-6

Purpose of this reading activity is to: increase our knowledge of space
exploration and understand how our knowledge and ideas about space
have changed over time (science). We are also learning to read non-fiction
texts and use our writing skills to share our understanding of this topic and
our ideas (literacy). Throughout this task we will need to use the skills of

Success Criteria
I will be successful when I can show….
-I have have scanned text to find key ideas.
-I have summarised the main ideas from the reading.
-I have put my answers in chronological order.

Focus

We are looking at using non-fiction text to increase our knowledge in our
science topic; SPACE. Your aim is to read and understand the timeline reading
and use this knowledge to complete the reading activity below.

First, Read the timeline cards. Click here for the space timeline pdf

Second, We will discuss what you have read. This will be a good time
to ask questions about anything you are unsure of.

Third, do your reading tasks.

Fourth, complete your reading activity. Remember to proofread, check
spelling and punctuation. Then do a self assessment and a peer assessment. Check it with a teacher.

Reading Activity

View and read the space timeline on the classroom walls.
Think about how how our theories/ideas and understandings
about the universe and Earth’s place in it has changed over time.

Answer the following questions.
Your answers need to be full sentences.
After you have answered all the questions please put them in
chronological order (time order, oldest first)

1) What are two things that Galileo discovered?
The two things that Galileo discovered are Jupiter's Moon and the
different phases of Venus. (1610)

2) Who discovered the first asteroid? The first asteroid was
discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi. (1801)

3) What was Sputnik 1?
This was called Sputnik 1 and it was a satellite
and it sent the  first signals from space. (1957)

4) In what year was NASA founded?
In 1958 the NASA was founded. And what does NASA mean?
(National Aeronautics
and Space Administration) (1958)

5) Who was the first woman in space? And where was she from?
Valentina Tereshkova was the first women in space.  Valentina
Tereshkova was from Russian (1963)

6)Where did Mariner 4 fly past? NASA’s Mariner 4 conducted the
first flyby of Mars. (1965)

7) In what year did Apollo 11 land on the moon?
Apollo 11 landed on the moon in 1969

8) What country launched Voyager probes 1 and 2 into deep space?
America launched Voyager probes 1 and 2 into deep space. (1977)

9) What happened that led to all space shuttles being grounded
for 3 years? Space shuttle Challenger exploded after launch,
killing the seven astronauts on board.  (1986)

10) When was the international space station completed?
They started building it in 1986 and they finished it in 2010. (1986)
11) How long did it take for the Cassini probe to arrive at Saturn?
After travelling for nearly seven years, the Cassini probe arrived
at Saturn. (2004)

12) What was interesting about New Horizons information about Pluto?
Data sent to the Earth showed that Pluto is fifty miles larger than was first
thought. (2015)

YOUR OPINION
After reading this information...

  1. Who do you think made the biggest contribution
  2. to our understanding of space?  Why?
  3. I think that Galileo because he found Jupiter's
  4. moon and the different phases of Venus.
  5. He also invented the first telescope.  (summarising key ideas)

    2) What do you think was the most important machine or
invention in helping us investigate space? Why?
(summarising key ideas) I think that the Space shuttles
are important because they carry people to space.

    3) What would you like to investigate about space? Why?
I would like to learn about the moon.
The moon was formed about 4.5 billion years ago following a collision
between Earth and an object the size of mars.

However as the moon moves around Earth, we see different parts
of that illuminated half (outer circle)

On the moon things weigh about one sixth as much as they do on earth
because the pull of gravity is weaker there.

The first science fiction film made in 1902 was about a trip to the moon.
