Reducing Our Plastic Waste

This Term we have been learning about the environment. We have been sewing fabric bags instead of using plastic bags. We have also made our own beeswax wrap to use instead of glad-wrap.  
I have enjoyed using my beeswax wrap for covering my food and my bag for carrying stuff. 

How to make beeswax wrap
First you need some fabric, some beeswax, an iron and baking paper. 
Then you put your fabric on top of a piece of baking paper. After you have done that you spread beeswax over top of the fabric then put a piece of baking paper on top of the fabric. Then you get the iron and put it over the baking paper and melt the beeswax into the fabric. After you are done hang the cloth onto something to dry.

Read the text, ‘Turning Old Into New’ and then complete the following
activities.

1. Why is recycling a good idea?

Recycling is a good idea because it gets reused and we do not have to throw it out.

2. How many tons of rubbish do New Zealanders send to landfills every year?
3. New Zealanders send 2.5 million tons of rubbish to landfills every year.

3. When rubbish breaks down what gas does it produce?
4.  What environmental problem does this contribute to? It produces C02. It contributes to global warming.

5. Explain where these resources come from;

Wood: wood comes from trees or plants.

Metal: Metal comes to rocks that have been mined underground.

Plastic: Plastic comes from oil.

6) How does oil form? Oil comes from plants and animals that lived
millions of years ago.

7) What are some of the things glass can be recycled into? More bottles,
Windows, Vases, Glasses

8) What are some of the things cardboard can be recycled into? Books
, paper and more cardboard.

9) What can plastic with the number 1 be recycled into?
CDs, Carpet and containers

10)  Attach a google drawing here that explains how number
1 plastics can be turned into clothing.

11) What are microfibres and what is the problem with them? They
are poisoning our underwater sea life and wrecking the food chain. Explain
what microfibres are. They are tiny fibres from our clothing.

12) What is Earth Overshoot day? Earth overshoot day is when we reach
the limit of resources we should have used over that year.

  

Glossary - Write what these words mean

Atoms: Are the smallest particle of a substance that can exist by itself.

Carded: Aligned in the same direction

Global Warming: Global warming is when the planet gets to hot and
ice melts and we get more water.

Malt: Malt is a grain you can use for brewing beer.

Natural resources: Materials that can be found in nature

Synthetic: Something that is made by people

In class we will be working on projects looking at issues around rubbish
and what we can do to help reduce this problem.

Keeping ourselves safe

At School we have been learning how to keep ourselves safe. Constable Jos and Terri have been helping us with this learning. Here are some of the things I have learnt.

Jack And The Beanstalk

Play Summary - Term 3 Weeks 1-2

For the next two weeks you are working in groups to practise and
perform a play. This is using our oral language and reading skills in literacy.
Our key competency focus is participating and contributing.

For writing your task is to summarise the main events in your play
in three paragraphs. You must plan your writing first but it is up to you
how you do your planning.  You must also write a fourth paragraph about
your experience of practising and performing your play.

Yr 6

I am learning to organise my text into paragraphs which begin
with a main idea and contain supporting information/detail.

I am learning to make links across paragraphs.

I am learning to use basic punctuation accurately.

I am learning to use dialogue punctuation accurately.

Yr 7

I am learning to use a range of different planning styles.

I am learning to plan my writing to suit the purpose of my writing.

I am learning to organise my ideas into paragraphs where the ideas are
clearly related and where there are links within and between paragraphs.

I am learning to use basic punctuation accurately in my writing.

I am learning to use complex punctuation to enhance my writing e.g. colons
: and semi-colons ; , and parentheses ().

Success Criteria

I will be successful when I can/have

-summarised the play in three paragraphs

-made links across my paragraphs

-used some basic and complex punctuation correctly (speech marks).

Jack And The Beanstalk

In the first scene of the play, Jack and his mother are
standing in the garden outside their small cottage. Jack's
mother tells him to go to the market and sell the cow.

In the second scene of the play, Jack is on the way
to the market Jack bumps into an old man who wants
to buy a cow. Jack sells the cow to the old man, but instead
of paying him money he paid magic beans. When he came back
home his mother was furious with him so Jack`s mother chucked
the beans out the window.

In the last scene of the play, Jack and his mother look
out the window and see a huge beanstalk. Jack goes
outside and decides to climb it. When he gets to the top he
hears a huge giant, Jack also saw a hen that lays golden eggs
and he steals it and his mother chops the beanstalk down so
that the giant can't catch them and they never see him ever again.

My team worked very well in our play. My team also participated
very well but next time they need to focus a bit more. Next time we
need to work on focusing  a bit more. People participated by
making props and practising.
