In The Beginning

1. The Maori name of New Zealand is Aotearoa which means the land of the long white cloud.

6. Queen Elizabeth II is officially Queen of New Zealand, represented in the country by a Governor General.

13. The Auckland City Sky Tower is the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere at 328 meters high.

Dear Scott,

Thank you for coming on camp with Room 7 in Arthur’s Pass.
I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you very much for carrying my bag.
Thank you for cooking and cleaning for us.

One thing that I really enjoyed was the tramp because
I really enjoyed walking with all of my friends and because
it was a really hot and a sunny day. I also enjoyed the small
creeks coming down from the snowy mountains because you
got to jump over all of them or you got to splash through the water.

Another thing I enjoyed was watching the sandstorms go past but
I did not like it when the sand got into my eyes. One thing I found
challenging was walking up the steep hills but I liked going down them.
The other thing I found challenging was when my foot got really sore.

The next thing that I really enjoyed was playing soccer with all
of my friends. I like playing soccer because it was really fun playing
with a big group. Phoebe, Milan and Wairini were goalies most of the time

Origami Dragon Eye

Last Thursday we made origami a dragon eye. This is my dragon eye.

Next time I will work on drawing my eye in the middle.

At the moment in class we have been working on descriptive writing. we have been using pictures to give us ideas of what to write about. Here is a piece of writing I did.

My Journey Back In Time

I am in a small room standing next to a big blue time machine. “Oh No!”
I screech. I have just fallen into the time machine. The time machine took
me millions of years back in time. “Splash.” I had just landed in a huge lake
that was sapphire blue with the clearest water I had ever seen with no ripples at all.
Underneath the water I spotted many colourful fish. The Journey back in time took
me to the most beautiful place I had ever seen. Then I looked up and turn around in one circle and instantly I see a Brachiosaurus, Barapasaurus and Pterosaurs! There were only plant eating dinosaurs in this area.

I spot lots of tree around with silver mist surrounding them. “Wow!” I said to myself outloud. There were huge rock mountains as taller then towers right in front of me. Suddenly I hear a sniffing noise right behind me I do not know if I should turn around, But instantly I turn around and see baby sauropod. The little dinosaur has greeny yellow eyes with a green body and a long neck. Then it walled away from me and starts to eat tree branches.

I keep walking and then I see a T-rex! Suddenly it sees me too and I run as fast as I can. As I jump over a log I feel like I can fly. I slip over in the mud and I smell so bad. I can see the tree swaying like dancers saying to me “Hide over here.” I run over to the trees and hide amongst them. The T-rex looks around for me but he can not see me. I walk into the lake so I can clean my clothes. The clear water starts to go a muddy brown colour. Then I spot a hole in the ground I walk over into it and it takes me back to my town.

The Morepork is New Zealand's most widespread owl species. Ruru are active at night.
Moreporks are small. When they are noticed by little birds Moreporks are often mobbed
as the birds, chattering in alarm, try to frighten them off. At dusk Moreporks emerge to begin hunting.

What it looks like?

Moreporks have all different types of brown and white on them. They have big kowhai
(yellow) eyes so they can see in the dark. The females Moreporks are bigger than the males.
They can turn their heads 270°. Moreporks have lots of feathers to keep themselves warm in
the winter. Moreporks have very short tails. Head to tail the Morepork measures around 29cm
and the average weight is about 175 g.

Where does it live?

Moreporks are relatively common throughout much of New Zealand but they are not common
through the eastern South Island. They are found only in open habitats in the South Island.
Moreporks are heard in the forests at dusk and throughout the night. They are only found in
New Zealand. They are not usually visible during the day. Ruru are endemic (which means they
are only found in one country) to New Zealand.

Feeding Behavior?

Ruru mainly eat beetles, weta, moths and spiders. They will also eat small birds, rats,
mice and lizards. Ruru fly silently because they have soft fringes on the edges of the wing
feathers. They catch their prey using their large sharp beaks. Moreporks fly silently so when
they go to catch their prey they will not hear them.

Reproduction?

In their nests, the Ruru have wood dust and pine needles. For nesting sites,
Moreporks normally choose dry hollows in trees, clumps of astelia and in the
forks of pine trees. Moreporks breed in summer and spring. Chicks develop their
wing feathers when they are about 7 weeks old. Both adults feed the young. The Male
brings food to the Female then she holds the prey in one talon, tearing of pieces that
she gently feeds to the chicks.

What are their natural threats?

Their threats are cats, possums, rats, stoats, pigs and hedgehogs. They protect
themselves by using their sharp beaks and talons. They often fly into windows of houses.
People are chopping down trees which is taking away their homes.
